$50,000 Challenge Grant Announced

Charles Schwab, founder and chairman of the brokerage and banking company that carries his name, was diagnosed with dyslexia as an adult. In celebration of the merger of Triad Academy and Summit School, Schwab has issued a $50,000 challenge grant to raise awareness of dyslexia and enable more students to benefit from the Orton-Gillingham approach to learning. Donations for the Schwab Challenge are restricted for financial aid to meet demonstrated need of students in the Triad Academy Division. Donors may designate gifts for immediate use or for the Triad Academy at Summit School Endowment. Income from this endowment benefits students for years to come.

Fourth Graders Produce Animated Movie

Summit Fourth Graders proudly present the world premiere showing of their animated movie Roar A River Open at 2 pm this Monday, May 21 in the Loma Hopkins Theatre. Family members and friends can see the movie at 7 pm on Thursday, May 24 in the Loma Hopkins Theatre. The movie is based on the short story Little Tricker the Squirrel Meets Big Double the Bear by Ken Kesey. Students integrated parts of the project into their art, reading, writing, math and computer classes. Make sure you take a look at the trailer on our YouTube Channel!

Summit Alum Publishes!

Nilla Dudley Childs '73 has published Puzzled: 100 Pieces of Autism, described as “Stories of a determined mother who never gives up on her quirky son.” Much of the book centers around her wonderful son, Daniel, who attended Summit from JrK through Fourth Grade. Nilla’s son, Daniel, was diagnosed at age 23 with Asperger’s syndrome. The book has been called “A redemptive saga of a real and transparent family of four that persists in loving each other no matter what.”

Take a Look at the Energy Kit

Don’t forget our visit with the Energized Guyz. Go to myenergykit.org and order your free Energy Efficiency Kit from Duke Energy. The kit includes a low-flow shower head, a compact fluorescent light bulb, gasket, water meter bag, aerators for faucets, an LED night light and more. The elementary school that orders the most kits relative to enrollment will win $1,000. (If Summit wins, we will donate the money to the Duke Energy Share the Warmth program to help pay power bills for our neighbors in need.) Anyone connected with Summit can register to receive the kit (including friends, neighbors, relatives, etc!). Summit to Acquire Triad Academy

On Monday, January 23, Summit’s Board of Trustees unanimously voted to acquire Triad Academy, making it a division of Summit School. The new division will be called Triad Academy at Summit School.

“This is a defining moment in the history of Summit School, one that honors our past as much as it speaks to our future. We have always believed that inspiring learning starts by engaging the individual. Summit and Triad Academy share a tradition of educating students one at a time, and a dedication to challenging ourselves to better understand how children learn in order to help them reach their full potential,” Head of School Michael Ebeling and Board Chair Mark Conger said in a letter to parents.

A task force of Summit and Triad Academy staff and board members began work this week to facilitate the integration, which will culminate with Triad Academy moving to the Summit campus in time for the start of school in August 2012.
